People are making their plans, hoping to make the connections that will push their project forward. If you are thinking of attending, take a few moments to work out what you want to achieve and how to actually achieve it.

A few things to remember and a few things to do:

Remember that the Cannes festival is mostly a trade fair for producers, distributors and financiers. Scriptwriters do attend, but not much is done for them. The exception is the French organisation Maison des Scénaristes (Writers' House) which organises interviews, get-togethers and offers a place to meet. All languages are welcome.

Set your priorities: do you want to meet producers, find co-producers, meet talent or announce an upcoming movie or career change?

Are you looking for local contacts or do you want to reach out to other countries? Most European movies are international co-productions. This expands your possibilities.

Draw up a list of people you want to reach out to. You'll find most of them in the Film Market database and/or Cinando.

Work that pitch until you can give 3-, 5 and 7 minute versions comfortably. Practice on everyone you know.

Start sending those e-mails, and personalise them.

Check if your country is hosting a pavilion and if you can register there (handy for meetings).

If you manage to get a meeting, keep it short and punchy - these people are busy and appreciate people that get to the point.

Remember that it is extremely unlikely that you will get a firm commitment at Cannes. What you are aiming to achieve is the permission to get back to the producers or directors after Cannes.

Fill every free moment by attending interviews, workshops, presentations, etc. It's tempting, but skip actual screenings. They take a lot of time and it's unlikely that you will meet the right people there. Plus, you can catch them at home later anyway.

Don't give up! If things are going badly, you'll have time to moan later at home. Go check another reception or happy hour on the German pavilion - just don't drink too much.

Further resources:

Should I pay to access the Cannes Film Market?

The Cannes Starter Guide (full e-book)

Get more scriptwriting news on Screenplay Europe now.
A-Lyrichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12843231660214371306noreply@blogger.com0Cannes, France43.552847 7.01736915.242613163821154 -28.138880999999998 71.863080836178852 42.173619tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8759641.post-34585271537007909602018-02-16T12:35:00.000+01:002018-02-16T12:35:24.607+01:00Screening your short movie in Cannes: what's the deal?

How to screen a short movie in Cannes

There are lots of events for short movies in Cannes. But every year someone decides they want to organise their own screening outside of the Short Film Corner. But before talking about how you might do this, you have to consider why. There is practically no real market for short movies as a separate entity. So the monetary returns are negligible at best. If you want to go through the expense and work of organizing a screening at the busiest market in the world, first be sure you know what outcome you want. The only one I am comfortable with is the goal of getting people interested in you and your next movie project. So make sure you have a great next project up your sleeve.

Concerning screenings, first of all, not many people know that you can organize screenings at the Palais itself by renting a small theater from as little as EUR375 for about 20 seats. There are advantages to doing it there as people know it and it's a hands-off operation. You won’t be fiddling with cables or DVDs yourself, leaving you more time to interact with the spectators (and grabbing their business cards).

Depending on the scale of your project, you could also try booking one of the actual cinemas in Cannes. Advantage: people know where to find them. Disadvantage: the cinemas probably don’t have many available time slots and will charge you considerably.

Small screenings at Cannes

Another idea is to organise a number of smaller screenings instead of one big one, so people can choose when to check the movie. The hotels have meeting and reception rooms. But don’t expect a bargain price from them. If you know any companies going to Cannes, ask if they would be willing to host your screenings or rent their facilities.

Promoting your short movie

It's very - repeat: very - important to publicize your screenings. You are up against a lot of competition. Everyone in Cannes is overloaded with proposals and invitations. The right people have to get your invitations and a publicist is the best way to do that as they have direct contacts. Ideally, you should connect with other filmmakers and ask who they would recommend for your sort of movie. Expect to pay several thousand euros. Going it alone is very, very difficult. But only you can determine if it is worth it, or if you can bring 15-30 people to come watch it yourself.

Whichever way you decide to go, stay positive and think long-term. Good luck!

If you have been thinking about entering a short film to the Cannes Festival, the deadline is March 3, 2015. That doesn't leave you much time. So what sort of questions should you be asking? I'll start with the easy one.

What are the criteria for submitting a short film?

The conditions for entering the Short Corner section of Cannes are very straightforward:

Films that have been produced during the 12 months preceding the Festival

Films whose distribution is limited to their country of origin

Films that have not been presented at any international motion picture
event. If the film has been selected for an international section
(competitive or not) of a festival, it becomes ineligible for the
Festival de Cannes. A selection is international if it presents films
from different countries.

Films that have not been shown on the Internet

Short films that do not exceed 15 minutes in length, including credits

The film should not be pornographic or incite hate

If the film is not in French or English, it should be subtitled into French or English.

The only one to look out for is n° 4 (not been shown on the Internet). Exposure is a key part of a short film's career these days. I do not know how closely they regard this condition.

But the bigger question is:

Why do you want to show your short at Cannes?

Let's face it, the chances of an award are tiny, and the cost is high. So look deep into your film-maker's soul and ask why you really want to attend. If you live outside of mainland Europe, attending Cannes is complicated and expensive. It is also very complex as a business. Are you willing to spend money promoting the film? Are you willing to be there the whole time?

Ultimately, the big question here is: Who would see it, to what purpose and at what cost?

Luckily, I have an answer of sorts. I do actually recommend attending Cannes if you think the movie or "content" business is something that you foresee as a career. It is where the whole world comes to meet, talk movie business, finance, pitch and distribute movies.

However, they are not there to watch shorts, as there is only a tiny market for them. Producers, agents, distributors and exhibitors are looking for great movies - even though each has their own definition of greatness.

The only reason to attend is to meet these people if - AND ONLY IF - you have a great idea for a movie. In this context, your short is only useful as a stepping stone. You can meet people saying, "I'm attending with a short at the Short Film Corner and I'm working on this other great project."

Just make sure the idea is a great one. For writers, this means that if the script has not been written, you have re-written the synopsis or treatment at least four times. You could also get a script reader involved. For directors, you need to be able to answer a question I just love: "Why do this story now, and why should I do it?" Think carefully, and if necessary change your idea to make it waterproof when the tough questions come (they will, believe me!).
The 10th edition of the Brussels Film Festival is about to kick off on June 8, 2012. The festival has historically favoured first films from European directors. This year's event will have special Polish, Italian, Spanish and Walloon (the French-speaking half of Belgium) evenings.

The festival also has a series of masterclasses lined up that include Peter Aalbaek, the producer of Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg (director of "The Hunt"), Jean-Michel Bernard (Michel Gondry's composer) and directors Peter Greenaway and Lucas Belvaux. Scriptwriters should block June 10, as Thomas Bidegain, writer of two exceptional films at this year's Cannes - "De Rouille et d'Os" (Rust & Bone) by Jacques Audiard and "A perdre la raison" by Joachim Lafosse, will be giving a 4-hour masterclass from 2pm at the Flagey centre.

The official competition features 12 European films competing for a total amount of €45,500, among which €10,000 for the Golden Iris Award for best film. The jury is composed of Frédéric Fonteyne (director), Tania Garbarski (actress), Peter Greenaway (director), Edouard Molinaro (director), Koen Mortier (director), Mireille Perrier (actress) and Bernard Yerles (actor).
To tie in with a horror exhibition at the EMP Museum in Seattle, horror maestro Roger Corman gave some background into the success of "Dinocroc" and the ludicrous "Sharktapus". Bad news for all of us scriptwriters that sweat over spec scripts for five years: all these films came from brainstorming sessions around titles! The rest was filled in by the team.

I've sat in on these sort of projects and nearly got a horror story set in Pyrenees going because of one. Before you rush around saying, "I could do that", remember that in these cases it's not what is being said that makes the difference, it's who is saying it and to whom!

PS: if anyone is interested in a low-budget slash movie set in the Pyrenees or Europe's first car tuning movie, you know who to contact.
Get more scriptwriting news on Screenplay Europe now.
A-Lyrichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12843231660214371306noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8759641.post-22183390841228555202011-12-04T18:31:00.001+01:002012-06-18T18:08:03.501+02:00Daerden Brothers pick up European screenplay award

At its 24th awards ceremony in Berlin, the European Film Academy handed out its awards for 2011. As is often the case, their choice of films is strictly - almost fanatically - art-house, with Lars Von Trier's "Melancholia" picking up Best Film and "Le gamin au vélo/The Kid With the Bike" the rather unusual choice for the screenplay award. Mads Mikkelsen, Stephen Frears and Michel Piccoli were also given awards.
Von Trier skipped the event, sending his wife to pick up the award instead. The academy has 2,500 members.
But time spent on the Bafta site turned up another gem: BAFTA screenwriters On Screenwriting. Six leading screenwriters (Simon Beaufoy, Aline Brosh McKenna, Christopher Hampton CBE, Sir David Hare, Ronald Harwood CBE and Peter Morgan) with credits including "Atonement", "The Devil wears Prada", "Frost/Nixon" and "Slumdog Millionaire" give their opinion on the craft, the films they have written and their career so far.

Visit it here.

I can't knock the awards for "The King's Speech" (original) and "Social Network" (adapted). Try and find both and read them. An education in itself.
Get more scriptwriting news on Screenplay Europe now.
A-Lyrichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12843231660214371306noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8759641.post-25891626499944755072011-01-14T16:10:00.002+01:002011-01-14T16:19:17.928+01:00Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network) to talk in London
"The themes of [The Social Network] are as old as storytelling itself: loyalty, friendship, power, money, envy, social status, jealousy. Fortunately for me, none of those people were available, so I got to write it."

Aaron Sorkin is the award-winning scriptwriter of "A Few Good Men" and "The West Wing".
